History of the Fund

In September 1998, IVCS opened the Children’s Scholarship Fund, a fund designed to help less privileged children in the schools around Amarpurkashi (APK). Set up as an account to receive one-off donations and regular payments from members or interested persons, frequent transfers are being made to the APK project to support the education of children in Gramodaya primary schools run under APK guidance. Children particularly targeted are those within low-income families or those families experiencing periods of temporary hardship. It was recognised that at such times, the education of children, especially young girls, would be one of the first "cut-backs" a family would make. Therefore, in an effort to maintain their children’s education the scholarship fund was made available to those requiring it.

Furthermore, the teachers, who are generally more familiar with a particular child’s plight, make the final decisions in selecting those who will receive help. This is based on staff discussions and personal knowledge of the families concerned. Once awarded, the grants are monitored on a monthly basis thereafter.
